Airway Management
PROCEDURE PERFORMED BY DR ALIMIA
One way we help patients breathe is through a tracheostomy — this is a small opening made in the neck directly into the windpipe (trachea) to allow air to flow in and out more easily. A small tube is placed into this opening to keep it open.
This may be temporary or permanent depending on your condition. It’s usually done under anaesthesia, and we take great care to make it safe and as comfortable as possible. After the procedure, you’ll be monitored closely and guided on how to care for the tube, with full support from the medical team.
It helps improve breathing, reduce the need for a breathing machine through the mouth, and make clearing mucus from the lungs easier.
Tracheostomy
A tracheostomy is one specific type of airway management. It involves making a small opening in the neck into the windpipe (trachea) and placing a tube there to help with breathing. This might be needed:
-
If someone needs long-term breathing support
-
After major surgery or trauma
-
When there is a blockage in the upper airway
It can be temporary or permanent, depending on the situation.
