Colonoscopy and upper endoscopy (also known as esophagogastroduodenoscopy or EGD) are advanced endoscopic procedures used to examine and treat conditions of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

These procedures are performed to evaluate a wide range of gastrointestinal symptoms, including but not limited to:

• Colonoscopy involves the insertion of a flexible endoscope through the rectum to visualize the entire colon and rectum.

• Upper endoscopy (EGD) involves passing a thin, flexible endoscope through the mouth to examine the esophagus, stomach, and upper portion of the small intestine (duodenum).

Therapeutic Capabilities

In addition to diagnosis, both procedures are capable of performing therapeutic interventions during the same session. These may include:

• Polypectomy – Removal of polyps to prevent colorectal cancer

• Biopsy – Tissue sampling for histopathological analysis

• Hemostasis – Control of bleeding using clips, thermal coagulation, or injection

• Stricture dilation – Widening of narrowed areas in the esophagus or colon

• Foreign body removal – Retrieval of ingested or retained foreign objects

• Stent placement – In cases of obstructing lesions or strictures

Safety and Preparation

Both procedures are generally safe when performed by experienced endoscopists. Patients typically undergo bowel preparation prior to colonoscopy and fasting before upper endoscopy. Conscious sedation or general anesthesia may be used to ensure patient comfort.

Combined diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy offers the advantage of immediate treatment during the same procedure, reducing the need for additional interventions, expediting care, and improving outcomes.
