A lymph node biopsy is a small surgical procedure done to remove part or all of a lymph node so we can check it under a microscope. This helps us find out the cause of swelling, infection, or rule out conditions like cancer.

How the procedure is done:

• The area where the lymph node is located (such as the neck, armpit, or groin) will be cleaned and numbed with a local anaesthetic so you won’t feel pain.

• A small cut is made in the skin, and the lymph node (or part of it) is gently removed.

• Stitches may be used to close the skin.

• The sample is sent to the lab for testing.

If the lymph node is deeper or difficult to reach, the biopsy may be done under general anaesthesia (while you’re asleep).

After the procedure:

• You’ll rest for a short while and can usually go home the same day.

• There may be mild discomfort, swelling, or bruising which will settle in a few days.

• We’ll give you instructions on how to care for the area and when to remove stitches, if needed.

The results from the biopsy usually take a few days and will help guide the next steps in your care.
